TROPEA
Tropea
stands on a spur which drops sheer to the beach. It is
defined “Pearl of the Tyrrhennian” because it is a
synthesis of art, history and nature. Inhabited since
prehistoric times, it was a Greek as well as a Roman
town. It also flourished during the Middle Ages – the
three-aisle norman-age cathedral dates back to this era

A
plesant stroll through the winding alleys of its
historical centre leads to the belvedere in Piazza
Cannone. Thence one can behold S. Maria dell’Isola
church of Basilian origin, as well as the riviera.
Pizzo is also a must: a visit
to Piedigrotta church carved in the tuff, Murat Castle
and, above all, to sample the famous “Tartufo” ice
cream, sitting confortably in Piazza Grande. |

| CAPO VATICANO
A
suggestive place owing to the extaordinary and awesome mediterranean
beauty, and above all to the warm climate throughout the year.
Stretched out in a crystal-clear sea, Capo Vaticano cascades down to
the beach the maquis and cliffs lashed by the wind on which palm
trees have thrived for millennia

In
the summer evenings the contour of the Æolian Islands is outlined
in the sunset sky tinged with red, is an unforgettable sight.
“Sometimes – Giuseppe Berto wrote – an huge mountain may
appear to the south-west: it’s Etna. Hence one beholds two
volcanoes in a single view, and both smoke. Although it’s not
magic,
those who are fortunate enough to lay eyes on it, might very
well suspect that it is.”
