STROMBOLI
AND THE ÆOLIAN ISLAND
Stromboli
is the most active volcano in the Mediterranean. The island is
quite a suggestive destination for excursions: the nightly climb
up to the 924-meter crater, the boat trip to Strombolicchio and
Ginostra, including the stop-over at the “Sciara del fuoco”
– for the eruption occurring every 20 minutes. Day trip to the
Æolian Islands.

SCYLLA
The
name Scylla is derived from the sea monster, which, according to
Homer, devoured seafarers after it had shipwrecked them. The
neighbourhood of Chianalea
rests on the beach, the sea often brushing the house doors
and flooding the winding lanes. Along these lanes you are likely
to notice boats, not motor-cars, parked.

STILO
Stilo
was an important Byzantine town. The Cattolica, a 10th
century church topped by five small cupoles over a cylindrical
drum, is proof of eastern influences. The interior is well looked
after and many orginal frescoes featuring the lives of Saints are
still visible.

REGGIO CALABRIA
Reggio
di Calabria is set on the southernmost tip of Calabria. It offers
a wonderful view of Sicily and the Straits of Messina. The Magna
Græcia Museum, which houses rich archeological collections, is a
must. The chambers featuring finds of the seas of Calabria have
the power to arouse in beholders ancient emotions, mainly through
the well-known Bronzes of Riace.
The
seafront of the town is rendered beautiful owing to mediterranean
and subtropical ornamental plants and trees.
